History
The Karen P. Nakon Breast Cancer Foundation was established on February 22, 2003, Karen’s 38th birthday, to honor her graceful and courageous five-year battle against breast cancer. In its inception, the Foundation was a small family tribute that sought to make a difference in Northeast Ohio. However, over the past two decades, with the generous help of loyal donors and other non-profits, the Karen P. Nakon Breast Cancer Foundation has grown to be a significant force in breast cancer patient assistance.
In 2010, the work of the Foundation was recognized at the Lorain County Life Saver’s Ball where the Foundation’s president, Matt Nakon, was given the Living Angel Award, an award that recognizes an individual in the community who has had a direct involvement in the field of cancer.
In 2017, the Karen P. Nakon Breast Cancer Foundation gave away its millionth dollar, a milestone many thought was impossible for such a small foundation. With those funds, the foundation was able to help over 800 families in Northern Ohio. The same year, the work of the Foundation was recognized at the Lorain County Difference Makers Gala where the Foundation’s president, Matt Nakon, was given the Eric Nord Award for Excellence in Leadership.
To date, the Foundation has awarded over $1.8 million in financial assistance to over 1,350 families. Please check the home page to get the most recent financial aid statistics.
